Following a 2-year hiatus, Youghal Medieval Festival returns bigger and better than ever before, to St. Mary’s College Gardens this bank holiday Sunday, 31st July 2022.
Thanks to a partnership with the Heritage Council, Irish Walled Towns Network, and Cork County Council, all events are free of charge! Experience all that the Middle Ages has to offer with living history demonstrations and re-enactments, ‘The Big Dig’ kids archaeology workshops, hands on traditional crafts, falconry demonstrations, a food and craft market and lots more.
Speaking in advance of the event, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Danny Collins, spoke of his delight at the return of the special event, celebrating Youghal’s unique heritage.
“This much loved and hugely popular festival is back after a 2-year break and was greatly missed. The festival can attract up to 8,000 people in one day and is a huge boost to Youghal’s economy. Free tours of St. Marys Collegiate Church and Youghal Clock Gate Tower are also available on the day. Families travel from all over the country and even abroad to attend this fun, FREE, family event. It is bigger and better this year and not to be missed,” said the Mayor.
This year, Youghal Medieval Festival will be among the first of Cork County Council’s funded festivals to take part in the Green Festivals Programme. This initiative aims to use festivals as a testing ground for waste reduction.
Speaking about the initiative, Tim Lucey, Chief Executive, Cork County Council said “Through the programme, we have learned that although recycling is important, it is more important to focus efforts on reducing waste in the first place. We recognise that reducing our waste volume will be a journey and we are proud to be part of the development of the Green Festival Programme.”
