The Year of the Hiker is one of John B. Keane’s most poignant plays. It tells the story of the Hiker Lacey who ,20 years ago, left his wife and children to take to the roads. Now, he returns, unknowingly, on the evening of his daughter’s wedding. The reception that he receives may not be what he was expecting.
This drama of love, bitterness, jealousy, selfishness, pride and reconciliation is one of John B’s finest plays, culminating in the real reason why the Hiker took to the roads and the reason for his return.
As the Hiker returns home the audience gets a penetrating insight into a family deserted by their globe-wandering patriarch, without portfolio, and the development of the family’s coping powers. Then the emotional hoops that each member must jump through when the reprobate returns, 20 years later. The Hiker knowing he is dying, is looking for forgiveness, and it’s the day of his daughter’s wedding!
The Year of the Hiker is directed by Jim Morey with the Hiker played by Mike Riordan and a cast of six local talented actors.
